This training is an introduction to continuous modeling with FLAC2D and FLAC3D. At the end of the course, participants will master the graphical interface, documentation and the main modeling steps. Concepts are illustrated using a tunnel excavation example, from building the model geometry to results analysis. This introductory course provides the foundation for more advanced use of the software, which can be covered in more specific training modules.
This webinar will showcase a study, funded by Electricity of France (EDF), by Ali Haidar and Fabian Dedecker on the dynamic behavior and resistance of a rockfill dam with drystone pitching, modeled in FLAC3D and PFC3D using the coupled FDM (Finite Difference Method) — DEM (Discrete Element Method) approach.
The dam is located in the Pyrenees mountains in France. The main objective is to retrieve the dam’s response to a probable earthquake in this region and to quantify safety and stability levels in case of such an event. The crest settlement after the earthquake was analyzed and compared with the historical measures of similar dams. Two approaches were compared to quantify the seismic resistance of the dam: PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) augmentation and SSR (Shear Strength Reduction).
